A Touch of Glass (DCM)
Port Clinton, OH

"A 10-pound show crammed into a two-pound package" is how Drum Corps Midwest head honcho Roman Blenski classified this year's A Touch of Glass show and Star of Indiana shot to the top of the package.

Nine corps, including three of the midwest's five championship finalists, wowed a capacity crowd estimated at well over 1,400 on a mild but breezy night in this Lake Erie community. And it was Star's "Roman Images", a celebration of music by Respighi, that vaulted the corps to another first place finish in the young season.

Star is now undefeated in three outings this year, each time besting second-place Phantom Regiment. But the interval between the corps tonight was only 0.9 of a point, with the Madison Scouts lurking just a couple points behind Phantom.

In division I, Star tallied 70.70 points, winning the general effect and visual captions. Phantom's "Phantom Voices" was good enough for 69.80 and top marks in brass and percussion. The Scouts' toetapping City of Angels racked up 68.00 points and second place in general effect. The Glassmen took fourth with 57.90 points while the Colts rounded out the division with 51.50.

Brass Under Glass (DCM)
Streator, IL

Star of Indiana is still awing their audiences with their "Roman Images." Zingali's drill is one of the best I've seen in years. The corps is not fully executing it yet, but just wait another month. They'll be hard to beat. Star seemed a little sluggish tonight. It could have been because of their four days off and the learning of new drill. I noticed an added segment to "The Pines of Rome," their second number. I talked with several corps members and they all agreed that ". . . the defeat took a lot of pressure off us." Star did manage to win high brass. Their horn line is incredible. I was happy to see the guard get rid of their hoops on poles. The flag feature will be an improvement. Star was second with a 76.10.

Star's "Roman Images" program showcases the corp's musically talented group, while minimizing the gimmicks of past years. Though there are no elaborate sets or excessive gadgets, Star won GE with an innovative use of gold plated mirrors that redirect beams from the stadium lights over the crowd.

The drum line is again top notch and won both field and ensemble percussion. But the Zingali drill is what could very well take Star to new levels of performance and drum corps stature.

Summer Music Games of Odessa (DCI)
Odessa, TX

Drum corps in Texas officially kicked off with the first annual Summer Music Games of Odessa. A fairly large crowd sat in unusually cool summer temperatures, for July, waiting to see if the threatening skies would open up and drench them and the six corps in competition tonight.

What can you say about Star of Indiana's production "Imaggini di Roma" that hasn't been said already? This is a corps that has matured and grown so much in the past two years and this season's show has all the makings of a true champion. Staged in four movements, "Roman Images" opens with pomp and fanfare as the color guard takes center stage, wielding golden bows and arrows. This year's guard is obviously improved and presents some wonderfully staged movement and choreography which adds a completeness to the program. I'm told some credit for this goes to Wesley Johnson, former dance soloist for the Garfield Cadets in 1987.

The demand of Jim Prime's musical arrangement would make just about any other corps fold under the pressure, but Star takes the bull by the horns and masters the challenge. A beautiful, full stereo effect is achieved in the second movement by scattering the drum line across the field and adding four marching keyboards spread almost 80 yards apart. Quite a treat to see and hear.

Star's overall production at this point is extremely strong and, although more modifications are in the planning stages, nothing really seemed to give the corps performance problems other than unsteady footing due to a rainsoaked turf. It was truly an electrifying performance, worthy of the standing ovation and a first place score of 82.00.

DCI Summer Music Games Tour
De Soto, TX

Star of Indiana arrived in Waxachachie on the Fourth of July. "During this week in Texas, we've made major changes to various places in the program," explained visual designer Dr. Len Kruszecki. "Speaking in terms of intensifying the impact and general effect qualities, major drill changes and musical changes took place at the beginning of the program, the entrance and fanfare and the end of the program by adding a greater degree of visual imagery to accomplish the effect of maximizing impacts throughout the show. And we have more surprises to come!

Star's drum major begins "Roman Images" with a Spartacus-style salute to the crowd. An opening fanfare features horns and a set of "flub-a-dubs" (16 and 19 inch bass drums mounted like tenor/tome). A fast rotating box unwinds to a company front as the horn line unleashes its power and sound. Four sets of marching bells create a stereo effect across the field as well as an authentic replica of the original Respighi music. Their split pit provides an antiphonal effect and expands the field by allowing the horn line to march in the center of the pit itself.

With continuous music and a near-continuous drill, Star literally sparkles across the field. The star formation now has an impact and then another one! The audience was on its feet before the last note had sounded. First with 81.20.

Falls Fanfare (DCI)
Wichita Falls, TX

The fifth annual Falls Fanfare was a great success as Star of Indiana, in true Roman fashion, stomped over the competition, winning the show by a margin of more than nine points. Star led decidedly in all captions, taking GE by 3.2, brass by 2.5, percussion by 1.8 and visual by 1.6.

Their "Roman Images" production is truly breathtaking and produced several standing ovations from the crowd, as well the audience favorite award. The opening of Star's show sported a new look from their last performance, with the far-right block of sopranos and archers being abandoned for a more central location. The sopranos now start off the front sideline and the power of their new location is felt immediately. The color guard members, enhanced by their authentic and spectacular Roman headbands and permed hair pieces, were featured extensively throughout the show. Their energetic and highly acrobatic work with their very unusual pieces of equipment was a gasp-evoking visual treat.

The brass handled the tremendously difficult horn chart with poise and the avalanche of notes sounded crisper than in the past. Stunning the audience was the now-you-see-it, now-you-don't drill, as it moved almost too quickly for the eye to follow. Especially noticeable was the small rotating block that turned around and around at very high speed, more times than seemed possible. Star's Roman feast of sensory delights earned a very well-deserved first place with a score of 82.50.

DCM Championship Finals
DeKalb, IL

With a significantly revamped and revised program, the Star of Indiana won their first Drum Corps Midwest title with a comfortable one point margin over the Cavaliers and a strong midwest field. Despite averaging of scores and only 0.6 points separating the top three corps in prelims, no corps changed position in finals competition.

Star of Indiana is now unquestionably the midwest leader after a long, unopposed Texas tour and rehearsal time. The opening fanfare now has an arc of sopranos staged immediately down the front sideline, playing backfield in an improved effect. The corp's forte at this point in the season is complexity and continuity, supported by improved execution.

Major drill rewrites have served to clarify the visual program. The final two minutes have been extensively revised, clearing up the star patterns and sending the horn line to the front sideline again in block formation at the end. All the upgrades are impressive and have obviously generated points in the captions.

Star swept brass, general effect, color guard and drum major captions and tied for first in percussion. The corps opened their lead from a narrow 0.4 in prelims to a wide 1.9 point margin in finals. Based on a difficult horn book and complex visuals, improved visuals execution is now the sole factor that stands between the Star of Indiana and the DCI title. 84.05.

Drum Beauty - Twin Cities (DCI)
Blaine, MN

The Star of Indiana used their prowess in percussion to full advantage to take this segment of the 1991 Drum Beauty Championship on a beautifully cool evening at the new National Sports Center.

Webster's Collegiate Dictionary defines a star as "a natural luminous body visible in the sky." I don't think the Star of Indiana has performed in the sky, but they certainly are a luminous body on a grass field! Grabbing top marks in total GE and percussion, Star's Roman epic is indeed impressive. In the middle of the show, their auxiliary uses what can be described as over-sized gold "medallions." I couldn't help but think while watching this portion that this show has all the potential of taking the smaller version of the gold medal (DCI Championship, that is) in Dallas. Star's 1.3 point bulge over Blue Devils in percussion gave them the win here tonight. First place score was 86.30.

    1 STAR OF INDIANA 86.3
    2 Blue Devils 85.1

Drum Beauty - Stillwater (DCI)
Stillwater, MN

Santa Clara Vanguard (85.70) won all captions except one and still lost to Star of Indiana (86.10) in the final show of the Drum Beauty 1991 series here tonight.

The contest was impeded by a number of fallen marchers from various corps who slipped in an area near the stage left 45 yard line.

Star can credit tonight's victory to their visual score. The Bloomington-based corps beat Santa Clara by 0.8 in the visual caption and that helped lift Star to its second win in the Drum Beauty 1991 series as they also won in Blaine the night before (86.30).

According to Bill Cook, corps owner and self-proclaimed Star of Indiana "bus driver," tonight's effort was not the corps' best of the year.

"We are working on some complicated drill changes that will take some time to perfect. Though the changes will take time to master, they will make us very competitive throughout the remainder of this season," he said.

In addition to the drill changes, Cook says corps enthusiasts should listen for musical changes.

    1 STAR OF INDIANA 86.1

DCI Preview of Champions Finals
Madison, WI

Star of Indiana dazzled everyone with their complex and highly-difficult musical book and drill. Perhaps not showing quite the level of emotion of several of their closest competitors, they nevertheless proved up for the quest.

The corps led all of the scoring captions except visual where a fourth place from the field judge relegated them to second in that area. What is amazing about their production compared to Cavaliers and SCV is that they are playing an incredible number of notes while moving extremely fast around the field. No one can deny that this is probably the most challenging show ever put on the field and Star is performing it quite up to par. First, 90.50.

    1 STAR OF INDIANA 90.5

North Side Fantasy of Brass and Drums (DCI)
Fort Wayne, IN

The Star of Indiana is proving its determination for that top spot in Dallas with an impressive win over the Santa Clara Vanguard at the Fantasy of Brass and Drums. Star's score was 90.60.

The corps' clarity in some parts of its music is becoming evident that their rehearsals are paying off. Some of the runs that the horn players are performing would be difficult standing still, much less moving at the intense speed.

The audiences are beginning to realize why Star won the DCI Preview show in Madison over the weekend. Some of the drill changes in the past few weeks are really starting to hit. When they crank up the end of the second movement, fans can hardly control themselves.

The guard is doing an incredible job this year. They won best guard at Drum Corps Midwest a week ago. Being such an integral part of the drill make you appreciate their equipment work even more. Their body work in the third movement is so beautiful and complements the music so well. They have added some new moves with their bows and arrows in the opener that accentuate the Circus Maximus theme. Star won all major captions tonight.

Soaring Sounds XII (DCI)
Centerville, OH

Star of Indiana continued paving their Appian Way with victories by beating the Cavaliers in a close match. Centerville High School was the site of this intense competition.

Star is making their difficult horn and drill books look so easy that sometimes the audience forgets just how intense they are. George Zingali is back with them for some drill rewrites that are promising to completely wow the crowds according to Drum Major Bobby Hullet.

Star won total brass and percussion, while the Cavaliers took high GE and tied with Star on visual. Star's score tonight was 91.40.

DCI Canada Finals
Hamilton, ONT

Despite the continuous threat of rain, the 1991 edition of the DCI Canada Championship was no disappointment to close to 10,000 people in attendance. And while the blast furnaces at the steel mills in Hamilton's north end were flaming all day, the real heat in the city was being generated on the slippery astroturf of Hamilton's Ivor Wynne Stadium.

With only two weeks left in the season, Bloomington's Star of Indiana put over two points between themselves and second place Phantom Regiment and seem to be the favorite heading down the stretch toward Dallas.

Taking all captions with the exception of visual, Star wowed the Canadian crowd with a show that can only be described as incredible. Hampered only by some minor ensemble problems, Star's "Roman Images" continue to impress with the Zingali drill that, at times, borders on the ridiculous and brass charts that seem to defy possibility. It was surprising however, that Star's score went up seven tenths from prelims to finals when the superior Star performance of the day did not take place under the lights. But taking the effect captions by a full point and brass by a half point, the victory for Star at finals was practically guaranteed. First place with a score of 92.20.

    1 STAR OF INDIANA 92.2
    2 Phantom Regiment 90.1

East Coast Classic (DCI)
Lynn, MA

With only ten days remaining in the 1991 season, five of the top 20 DCI corps converged at the Manning Bowl for an evening of spectacular drum corps. The Star of Indiana continued to dominate all competitors, winning with an impressive score, of 91.50, 1.9 points over the Santa Clara Vanguard (second, 89.60). The hometown favorite Boston Crusaders were third with a 78.60 and the Glassmen (fourth, 74.10) blew past L'Insolite (fifth, 70.00), beating them by 4.1 after trailing them by 1.9 at last night's contest in Rome, NY.

Caption awards for percussion and GE went to Star and Star and SCV tied for high brass. The Vanguard took high color guard and the award for best drum major went to Rich Perrier of the Boston Crusaders.

Star of Indiana seems to be heading toward their first DCI championship with their tour de force production of Respighi's "Roman Images." Their superb brass and percussion sections, combined with "the drill that wouldn't stop," make for a seemingly unbeatable combination.

At times, the complexity of the visuals seemed to hinder the impact of the program and kept the crowd from getting emotionally involved. The people around me just shook their heads in awe after the first minute - Star was two moves ahead before you realized what they had just done! This year they have set the musical and visual standard by which all corps will be judged.

    1 STAR OF INDIANA 91.5
    2 Santa Clara Vanguard 89.6

Maple City Sound '91 (DCI)
Hornell, NY

Star of Indiana continued their winning ways as they scored 92.20 and took all major captions at the Maple City Sound contest. The enthusiastic fans in the Hornell area filled the stadium early as they support both a DCA and a DCI contest in this small Southern Tier community.

Star took the win by executing an extremely difficult musical and visual show. The show is performed at a high rate of proficiency, but there is still room for improvement as Star heads down the "dog days" of summer to Dallas and their hope for their first championship.

DCI Mid-America
Bloomington, IN

Star of Indiana maintained their late-season dominance of the junior corps scene by winning the DCI Mid-America Regional with a 93.50.

Still performing masterfully in the face of improved performances by their competitors, Star of Indiana outdistanced the second-place Santa Clara Vanguard by 1.8. The greatest impact of Star's program was in general effect, the caption in which the corps was 0.8 ahead of the second place group. Although Star of Indiana also placed first in visual and percussion, the corps was only 0.1 ahead of the Santa Clara Vanguard in percussion and 0.4 ahead of the Blue Devils in visual.

During Star of Indiana's performance tonight, every element of the program was in harmony. Marching onto the field to a standing ovation, Star did not disappoint the hometown fans, especially one toga-clad gentleman (Bill Cook). At every flash of color and musical flourish the audience responded. "Oohs" and "aahs" were heard as stars flashed, crosses revolved and stained glass-patterned flags filled the air. By the time the Star of Indiana formed the final cross, the Bloomington spectators were on their feet.

As the corps are finding their way toward Dallas, there was a stop-off in Evansville at Reitz High School. The Star of Indiana scored a 93.20 in their "Roman Images" show.

Star has made some changes in their show in the past few weeks that helped better explain the concept of their show. Toward the end you begin to feel the persecution of the Romans when Star portrays several crosses in their show. It begins with the guard feature and ends with a cross exploding into another cross in the opposite direction to end the complex drill. Star took all captions except brass.

DCI World Championship Semifinals
Dallas, TX

Despite a 0.6 drop in performance from the quarter-finals, Star of Indiana retained its first place ranking in the semi-finals of the DCI World Championship.

Star's 97.00 semi-final performance and 97.60 quarter-final performance netted the corps a first place ranking with a 97.30 leaving the Indiana corps one performance short of the world title.

Although the Star of Indiana has gone undefeated since late June, the corps is still vulnerable to the Cavaliers, who ranked second in the semi-finals with an aver aged score of 95.50. In fact, the third place Phantom Regiment's semi-final score of 94.50 and the fourth place Santa Clara Vanguard's score of 94.30 put both of them in position for a possible upset.

DCI World Championship Finals
Dallas, TX

In their seventh competitive season, Star of Indiana dominated Drum Corps International finals week and walked away with the 1991 DCI World Championship title in a spectacular season-ending battle of seven top corps at the Cotton Bowl. For the first time in history of Drum Corps International, only corps from the midwest region occupied the elite top three positions and Star became only the second midwestern corps to earn the world title.

On the strength of balance, consistency and performance captions and exceptional individual musicianship, Star held first place through quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals competition, despite a final margin of only 0.7 of a point. The corps had maintained an unheard-of two-point margin in the preliminary competitions.

Amazingly, in caption awards, Star of Indiana emerged with solely a first place tie in general effect with Phantom Regiment. Quite clearly the most consistent corps throughout the captions, Star took advantage of striking caption inconsistencies of the other perennial DCI powers in 1991 and narrowly maintained their lock on first place.

Star performed a definitive Roman pageant, from heralding sopranos to the mammoth dual crosses. The sheer number of notes in the difficult arrangements were unbelievably performed at breakneck drill speed, cleanly and clearly, taking the activity to a new musical level of achievement and demand. 97.00.
