From The 1990 Drum Corps International Championship Program:
Just when we thought we figured out Star of Indiana, they turned the corner and came at us from a completely different angle. In their brief five-year history, they've taken us through the wonderful world of Disney, led us to a close encounter with the stars, brought us tickets to the circus, explored a Gershwin folk opera and strolled through the gardens of England. For 1990, they've traveled back 2600 years to the Book of Daniel, as we witness the musical splendor of Sir William Walton's "Belshazzar's Feast."
The non-literal show is based on Walton's most ornate and intricate composition, a complexly-textured oratorio for orchestra, split choirs and two antiphonal brass bands. Star of Indiana has captured all these elements of the original in a breathtaking and challenging production, the most daring project they've ever tackled.
The colors purple and gold are symbolically important to the Biblical story on which Walton's music is based. These colors are seen on the guard and in the silks. Various pagan gods of wood, brass, silver and gold are represented around the field at the start of the show by numerous brass and percussion sections. The initial frenzy and passion of decadent jubilation ultimately leads to a profound and sensitive lament, a contemplation of loss and a sense of ominous foreboding. At the end, a renewed commitment to good is evidenced by happier music and joyous harmonies, leaving us emotionally uplifted.
