From the 1988 Drum Corps International Championship Program:
Life in the South Carolina costal town of Catfish Row will come alive as Star of Indiana brings musical moments from George Gershwin's American opera "Porgy and Bess" to the drum corps stage.
In three major productions, Star will represent the diversity of moods and emotions which Gershwin incorporated into his memorable classic.
With silks symbolizing Catfish Row, the first production opens at dawn in this mythical little coastal town with the upbeat spiritual revival "O, I Can't Sit Down." Utilizing the colors of a sunset, dawn turns to dusk with the sweet and lovely lullabye "Summertime."
A dark, ominous hurricane strikes Catfish Row in the second production with a combination of music from "The Fugue" and "The Hurricane." From the pre-storm, through the hurricane, to its resolution, the corps will represent its destructive power and turbulence.
The love Porgy feels for Bess comes to light in the third production as Star performs the beautiful love ballad "Bess, You Is My Woman Now." IN the closing production of this American opera, Bess takes off with another man but Porgy, persistant in his love for her, sets out to find her. With "O Lawd, I'm on my Way" Star will capture the powerful emotion of this Gershwin finale.
