From the 1987 Drum Corps International Championship Program:
Star of Indiana has found the ideal blend of two compatible art forms in its 1987 program offering.

"We're combining the excitement of drum and bugle corps with the spine-tingling experience of the circus," says its director James Mason.

Indiana has deep roots in the circus world, with some 20 circus' headquartered there. As a result, interest in the circus runs high, inspiring key contributions to the staging of Star's program, like that of Charles David Higgens, a professor of theatre design who helped construct an authentic circus backdrop that "continually changes to set the mood" of the musical repertoire, says Mason.

Star opens with Barnum & Bailey's Favorite, performed in an "upfront, traditional drum and bugle corps style," Mason says. Watch for the corps to form a big top toward the end of the number. Circus Suite is a night's performance under the big top, as jugglers, clowns and animal acts whip past. They close with Thunder and Blazes, a traditional circus march that has been transformed into a lush ballad.

Star of Indiana will field "professional" caliber animal costumes, execute a breathtaking "wheel of death" and feature a local street performer - Steve Ragatz - who is an accomplished juggler, as part of the circus atmosphere.
