Opening with a big sound like the stars above was Star of Indiana, with an outerspace presentation. Overall, many aspects of this show are difficult to describe, with the Zingali drill and the color guard's use of equipment never seen before, such as the double-bent flag poles, but the music is highly recognizable and the show definitely out of this world. Conversation from Close Encounters has many well-done sound effects, very close to the original. Fourth place, 68.60. |

The Star of Indiana appeared to have had a profitable winter program. The whole visual program seems so unified. When they wanted to seem elegant, they knew how to look elegant at the same time. Music expressed moods and props extended the deepness of these moods. The brass line was at times frenetic, as in "answerbacks" or rejoinders in the man-confronts alien segment from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but could be more serious and richly symphonic at other times. The crowd loved their full, autumn-voiced balance and their keen displays of sustained poise and simply glimmering brilliance. They seem to have handled the transition from Disney fantasies of today to the inter-stellar fantasies of tomorrow quite successfully. At least, the crowd thought so, judging by their applause. |

Lurking dangerously close to the leaders, the Star of Indiana has made unprecedented progress over the last week. Their program is beginning to gel beautifully after having made substantial changes to their visual book. Under master designer George Zingali, Star is beginning to discover how to use all their innovative colorguard equipment. Huge moving sets climax each of the E.T., Close Encounters and Star Wars productions. An extended build at the end of The Conversation inspired the entire crowd to leap to their feet, cheering wildly. With a surprising win in the brass caption, Star managed an impressive thirdplace showing, 73.70. |

The powerful Star of Indiana from Bloomington, Indiana, then demonstrated that it is the group to watch. Formed in the fall of 1984, they not only have the distinction of being the first fully corporate-sponsored drum and bugle corps, but of being the highest ranking first year corps - tenth - at the DCI World Championships.
The group's distinctive black pants and magenta jackets with a white star on the breast, along with white Aussie hats with red bands and black plumes, make a colorful sight. Their 100-plus corps is also capable of making a colorful sound - and proved it with a repertoire featuring Adventures on Earth from E.T., Conversation from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Throne Room and Finale from Star Wars. The Star of Indiana's finale took advantage of most of the field, featuring maypole streamers and a majestic musical flourish.
REVIEW #2:
E.T., Call Home! Your Bloomington, Indiana home, that is. Star of Indiana has your number. And How! The movie scores composed by John Williams all have a soaring, thickly emotional tone, and second-year Star of Indiana is exploring three space frontiers with music from "E.T.," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Star Wars." The three-part show beautifully shows off the musicality of the scores, while visually illustrating them with some out-of-this world props. But don't be fooled by all the activity on the field. Both brass and percussion sections are executing magnificently for mid-season. Couple that with a dizzyingly-difficult visual show, and we're probably in for a second season of shooting stars - right into orbit. Third place, 75.6. |

Next came the mighty set-up crew, prepping the field for the highly entertaining Star of Indiana. This corps uses two semitrucks to carry all their equipment, which is quite plentiful. Fielding 66 horns, 27 drums and 28 guard, the Star moves to the strains of E.T.-Adventures on Earth to a truly unique Zingali drill, and are they loud! A twisted flagpole and a soloist on the five-yard line introduce Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The show-stopper is the alien reply by 18 contras! The new Star Wars closer ends in a star pattern and a wall of sound. Watch out for big things this year from the Star of Indiana. |

Speaking of progress, the Star of Indiana has rewritten a major block of their show (The Throne Room from Star Wars) in both music charts and drill, discarded the giant "gerbil-wheels" and added new flag colors throughout the program. One would expect lower scores due to all this change, but the determined members of the corps have actually maintained the progression of their scores. Star turned in a powerful prelim performance that could not be equaled in finals. The horn line generated so much sound at the conclusion of The Conversation that comparisons to the Atlanta horn lines of the late '70s were drawn throughout the bleachers, as Star also barely missed the high brass award. However, the tempos are so furious that the members are literally running most of the show, causing scores in the visual caption to hamper the unit. Third, 79.50. |

A large gathering of central Ohio drum corps fans were treated to a super presentation of precision and entertainment at the ninth annual Pageant of Champions. The repeat winners of this show, making it two in a row and a total of three wins in five appearances, were the Madison Scouts, scoring 83.40. All seven corps showed improvement from the first tour, as DCl's second tour began here in Columbus tonight. Leading the way in the increase in scores was the Star of Indiana, with almost a 14-point addition. Their score at Indianapolis in June, the first DCI show of the summer, was 67.40. For second place tonight, their score was 81.30. |

The large crowd at Byers Field here tonight was dazzled by a fabulous competition. When the smoke cleared, Star of Indiana had won their first competition ever by barely edging the Madison Scouts.
Other corps who competed, in order of finish, were: Phantom Regiment, 27th Lancers, Bluecoats, Florida Wave, Knights and Crossmen.
REVIEW #2:
The Bloomington, Indiana, Star of Indiana brought the music of John Williams to life tonight. The horns were brilliant, the drums tight and the guard different. New wigs added for tonight's show gave the Star color guard a certain outer-space quality. It was ironic that the crowd who roared its approval as the corps trooped the stands later booed the final decision. First, 81.90. |

Star of Indiana is another corps whose mid-season program changes are just coming into fruition. Extensive rewriting and cleaning of the contrapunctal development section and the Conversation and a much more conservative approach to the Star Wars Throne Room Scene gave the program a much improved overall flow. Star's innovative color guard accessories seem to elicit varying reactions from the spectators. The radiating multicolored banners lent a genuinely effective atmosphere to the Throne Room section, but some fans expressed dislike for the white wigs and black-faced makeup which the guard wears throughout the show. . . . On a night threatened by heavy rain, a large crowd assembled at East Field to watch the reigning DCI champion Garfield Cadets take all with an 87.60, narrowly beating the Star of Indiana with an 86.80. Other scores: in third, Phantom Reigment, 84.70; fourth, 27th Lancers, 79.20; fifth, Ventures, 61.00; and sixth, Connexion Quebec, 59.00.
When the Star of Indiana took the field, they took on a new look. Shakos with large white plumes and odd-looking wigs on the guard prepared the crowd for E.T.-Adventures on Earth. The twisted flagpole continues to be effective as Star moves into Close Encounters of The Third Kind. One could see that the incredible marching demand seems to be somewhat overwhelming at times, as Star seems to weave in and out of the complex sets into the somber arrangement of Star Wars. Star exhibits amazing intensity in their show. Watch for a big jump in Madison by the Star of Indiana. |

Star was the first of the six-pack of six corps that could finish almost anywhere from third to eighth. It includes Spirit, Cavaliers, Madison, Suncoast and Garfield.
Star is a curious mix of a traditional drum corps concept and the avant garde. The brass and percussion lines present what a drum corps purist must love: recognizable music, musical power and range, big forms, great technique and a cadet uniform. The color guard is unique to the point of bizarre, with fright wigs and a grab bag of equipment that, in some cases, has more impact for its oddity than its utilization. The entire package is one of delight. It is a visual and aural treat. One wonders how this unit could be consistently beaten by eight corps. |

Continuing its theme of recognizable popular music, the second year Star of Indiana journeyed into familiar space territory with the light cinema music of John Williams.
The Academy Award-winning scores from "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," and "Star Wars" were the bookends for the show, with the symphonic "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" as the centerpiece of the production.
The sixth place brass scores showed the strength of the corps, but fans were entranced by the "trekkie" auxiliary unit, complete with white fright wigs, and space suit outfits. The lovely white starburst skirts used last year served double duty when they became dashing capes.
Oddity and experimentation in the auxiliary unit kept things intriguing with double "L-shaped" poles used in the "Adventures on Earth" segment from "E.T." The "Conversation" from "Close Encounters" was the shining star of this production with a single soprano pleading for an answer from the 18-contra "mother ship." The cacaphony of sound built as the movement intermingled across the field to a deafening, exhilarating finish.
"The Throne Room" and "Finale" from "Star Wars" capped this space trip with deep, rich cool colors gracefully moving around the field, until bright yellow flags accentuated the ending effectively, signature star formation and all. |
