audition faq

What is the time commmitment/agreement period?

Once accepted for participation, the cast will be required to attend an orientation weekend in Bloomington, Indiana (May 28 - 31, 1999). During this weekend, the cast will receive cast assignments, receive performance materials, get measured for costumes, receive employment agreements, etc. After the orientation weekend, the cast will work independently throughout the summer memorizing music/routines and other performance assignments.

On Friday, September 3, 1999, the cast will be required to move to Bloomington, Indiana (The Visual Ensemble cast will be required to move to Bloomington 6 weeks prior to the full cast beginning on Friday, July 23, 1999). For the full cast, there will be 8 weeks of rehearsal in Bloomington and 4 weeks of rehearsal in London, England. It is anticipated that the show will run for 20 weeks (mid to end of November, 1999 to mid-April, 2000).

Am I responsible for my own housing arrangements?

No. Housing will be provided by Star of Indiana.

While in Indiana, multiple-occupancy housing will be available at Star Hall located in Bloomington, Indiana. You may make other arrangements if you wish at your own expense.

While in London, condo-type arrangements, similar to a 2-bedroom apartment will be provided for all cast members. It is likely that each cast member will have a room-mate in each bedroom.

What would be a typical rehearsal/performance week?

A rehearsal day is basically divided into 3 rehearsal blocks: the morning, the afternoon, and the evening. Working/rehearsal hours and days off often vary according to cast member assignments, production schedule objectives, cast member preparation, etc. Although rehearsing all day is sometimes necessary, typically the rehearsal schedule is posted in advance and includes rehearsing 2 of the 3 rehearsal blocks per day.

In London, the show will basically be a 2-hour production. The work week after opening night will include 8 shows per week, one day off, plus any rehearsals deemed necessary by the production staff in an effort to maintain the show at a high level.

What is the compensation package?

Each participant will be paid a weekly salary plus housing, transportation, food, and health care insurance while in the cast. When in "rehearsal" mode, each cast member will be paid a salary of $150 per week; when performances begin in London, the salary will be increased to $250 per week.

For the Visual Ensemble, highly developed skills are required for participation. As a result, the VE will move to Bloomington, Indiana 6 weeks prior to the full cast (July 23, 1999 to September 4, 1999). To develop these skills, we have allocated $600 dollars per cast member for this additional time period.

Basically the total compensation package per week is as follows:

Rehearsal (Indiana)

* indicates while in London, each cast member will receive a stipend of $170 in addition to salary for food and transportation to/from the theater.

All living expenses other than those indicated above will be the responsibility of the cast member.

In addition to the compensation package, given the potential success of the project, a bonus program is being considered for implementation at the end of the agreement period.

Do I need a passport?

Yes. Each cast member will be responsible to obtain a passport.

Do I have to join a union?

No. At this time, Star of Indiana believes that Brass Theater is an entity in to itself and not applicable to either the actors or musicians union.

Is there a chance the show will be extended or cut short?

Yes. If the show is successful/profitable, extensions may be offered to all cast and staff 30 days prior to the end of the agreement period. Conversely, the show could be closed at any time with at least 2 weeks notice. In this instance, salaries, etc. would be discontinued at the end of the notice period.
